Our Early Years Department is a safe and happy environment that engages and excites children. We want every child to develop a love for learning and respect for others, as we believe these two things are the foundations of a successful future. We put a large emphasis on manners and kindness, which are supported by our Christian faith. It is important that children have a solid foundation of knowledge, which means we allow children to move at their own pace, rather than rushing them through the curriculum.

We follow the EYFS Statutory Framework which divides the areas of learning into prime and specific areas. These are:

  • Prime
    • Communication & Language
    • Physical Development
    • Personal, Social, and Emotional Development
  • Specific
    • Literacy
    • Mathematics
    • Understanding the World
    • Expressive Arts & Design

We teach reading through a combination of Jolly Phonics and Letters and Sounds and our maths lessons are designed in a way to support the introduction of Singapore Maths in Year One, which means plenty of hands on, practical application work. Specialist teachers teach PE, Music, Drama (Reception only), Spanish (Nursery only), and French on a weekly basis. Weekly assemblies include bible stories and songs of praise which are reflected in daily lessons and circle times.

All terms are guided by a central topic around which the day evolves. Past topics include: All About Me, Around the World, People who Help Us, Once Upon a Time, and All Creatures Great and Small. Trips are taken throughout the year to support our learning. These have included local theatres, The Discover Centre, local fire stations, and Battersea Park Zoo.

Children in the Nursery are placed into key worker groups which are supervised by the Nursery Manager. Reception children are placed into small classes led by a teacher and a teaching assistant.

We are particularly proud of our well-equipped Nursery and Reception, not only because of their excellent staff/pupil ratios, but also because of the tangibly happy atmosphere. Indeed, parents are advised to read the recent inspection reports concerning the Nursery and Reception classes, where they will read an objective report which underlines the success Pointers has had in creating a wonderful environment for young enthusiasts.
